How to support our children's health naturally

I’d like to dedicate this article to my children, my grandchildren, and all of those mothers out there. A devoted mother is the best ally anyone could wish for. Let’s focus for a few minutes on what we can do to support our children’s health, and help them flourish and enjoy the many gifts of nature.

The importance of the immune system

When discussing children’s health, the first thing we need to address is the immune system. We all need a strong immune system to survive and to thrive. It is important that the immune system is well balanced and does not overreact or underreact to the many pathogens and toxins we come in contact with. When our children are ill, this can cause a lot of worry and stress. The better we understand the pathology of whatever our child is dealing with and the better we understand the needs of the physical body, the better equipped we are to restore well being. So, let’s begin by learning how to establish a healthy immune system.

The first step in strengthening the immune system is to address any possible deficiencies. This is best done by providing the best quality food we can for our children. Foods that strengthen the immune system include barley wheat grass juice powder and spirulina, wild blueberries, sweet potato, squash, and banana. All fruits and vegetables contain many essential phytochemicals, many of which science has yet to discover. Bananas, for example, contain not only amino acids and potassium which are necessary for proper brain development, but they contain some protein as well. Berries are a powerful fruit rich in phytochemicals, antioxidants, vitamins and flavonoids that protect the body in many different ways. Celery and cucumbers contain mineral salts that support the nervous system and brain function, as well as dates, coconut and avocado that provide the brain with much needed glucose. People often ask me about the importance of buying organic produce when feeding their families. Even though organic produce has a much higher nutritional value and contains less toxins than non-organic produce, we aren’t always able to eat organic food. This is when we should remember that it is equally important to be at peace with whatever you can do for now, while continuing to find new ways to provide the best.

Children come into this world with a unique personality, and a clear opinion as to what foods they like or do not like. It’s not always easy to convince a child to eat a particular food, and thus we need to exercise patience, flexibility and ingenuity. To help you with this, we bring you child tested recipes such as the melon popsicles.

One of the ways to support a child, whose eating habits are lacking, is to find a high quality supplement. It is extremely important that we look closely at whatever supplement we are choosing. Supplements often contain harmful additives such as MSG found in natural and artificial flavorings, artificial sweeteners, citric acid (which does not come from fruit), and more. This is true of even products labeled as organic.

When mentioning supplements, one of the most important is zinc. A large portion of the population – adults as well as children- are lacking in zinc. We cannot survive without zinc. A deficiency in zinc is behind many childhood diseases such as “autoimmune” diseases, repeated ear infections, bronchitis, pneumonia, mononucleosis, tonsillitis and sinusitis. A high quality zinc supplement is especially important in any recurrent diseases. Another way to add zinc to our diet is to incorporate pumpkin seeds wherever and wherever possible.

An additional factor to be aware of when trying to assess the cause behind a recurring disease, is the presence of toxic heavy metals within our children’s bodies. Toxic heavy metals put a tremendous strain on the immune system and feed viruses as well as bacteria. Toxic heavy metals are behind a long list of diseases and syndromes, such as ADD, ADHD, autism and any recurring viral or bacterial disease. Toxic heavy metals reach our children when they are still in the womb, so they can be present even in little babies. We can prepare a heavy metal detox smoothie with relative ease (it even tastes good), yet we need patience and perseverance when ridding the body of these toxins.

What to do when a child has a fever?

A fever is an indication that the immune system is active and fighting a pathogen, and we don’t want to interfere too much with this process. All said and done, it is important we address an especially high fever. The first thing to do when dealing with a fever is to cut back on food, while making sure the child is well hydrated. A good way to provide sufficient fluids is by helping the child drink a clear vegetable stock, cucumber juice, water with a bit of fresh lemon juice or coconut water. Most reoccurring fevers are due to mononucleosis that is often diagnosed as rubella, tonsillitis or a nonspecific viral disease (see the article on theEpstein-Bar virus). Often streptococcus exists as a cofactor and needs to be addressed as well. Situations such as these will improve with a good zinc supplement together with l-lysine. The best food you can have to rid the spleen of the virus is asparagus juice, which can be added to other juices to make it more palatable.

In Conclusion

When wanting to support our children, it is important to remember that each of us has carefully chosen when, where and with whom to enter this world. On a soul level, we choose our children, and they choose us. We are here on this Earth together to evolve and develop, and often our children’s challenges help us move forward on our own path of evolution. Each lesson we complete opens a door to a whole new realm of possibilities and solutions. It is important to keep an open mind when trying to understand the lesson at hand. The more we discover, the easier it is to move forward. There is always a way, and tomorrow is another day.

With much love,

Beth
